Edmonson clay pit 2 Nove~ber 1, 1985
3) A soil test should be performed to determine the proper f rtilizer re-
quirement. In lieu of a soil test, fertilize the entire gray 1 pit with
40 pounds per acre each of available elemental nitrogen (N) a d phosphoric
acid (P205). The fertilizer must be incorporated into the to 2 to 3
inches of soil using a disk or harrow implement. Fertilizer hould be
applied immediately prior to seeding, or at the time of seedi g.
4) Soils that have been overcompacted by traffic or equipmen should be
tilled to break up rooting restrictive layers, harrowed and t en rolled or
packed to prepare the required firm seedbed. The seedbed sho ld be well
settled and firm, but friable enough that seed can be placed t the recom-
mended seeding depth. The ideal firmness is when a one-half nch boot
prinX is left after walking across the soil surface.
5) Recommended varieties and seeding rates:
•
Species Variety Mix Percentage Pounds/Acre*
sideoats grama Vaughn or Niner. 30 2.7
blue grama Covington or Hachita 20 .6
sand dropseed - 10 .1
little bluestem Pastura 10 .7
western wheatgrass Arriba or Barton 30 4.8
This mix is adapted to the site, will provide adequate ground cover protection,
and will provide livestock forage.
*seeding rates are given in pounds of Pure Live Seed (P LS)
PLS = purity x germination
6) Seeding should be done using a grass drill. The drill sh uld be equip-
ped with a satisfactory seeding mechanism, agitator, double d sk furrow
openers, depth bands, and packer wheels or drag chains. The istance between
drill rows should not exceed 12 inches. Broadcasting the see can be done
in areas which are inaccessible for drilling, or are too roug for equipment.
If the seed is broadcasted, then the above seeding rates shou d be doubled.
The broadcasted seeds should be uniformly distributed over th ground sur-
face, and mixed into the soil with a harrow or by hand raking Planting can
be done anytime between November 1 and May 31. Seeding shoul not be done
when the soil is frozen. The seeds should be planted between 1/4 and 3/4
inch deep.

7) Mulch should be applied to the reseeded area to help mode ate soil temp-
eratures, and to improve soil moisture absorption and holding capacity.
Crass hay or cereal grain straw free of weed seeds is recomme ded. Apply
4000 pounds of mulch/acre to the soil surface. At least half of the material
should be 10 inches or more in length. Do not use fine mater als. The
mulch should be anchored either with commercial netting produ is (on slopes
steeper than 3:1) or mechanically. The latter can be accompl shed using a
heavy disk implement, with dull blades, to punch the mulch in o the soil 2
to 3 inches deep. Crimping should not sever the mulch. Mulc ing should
not be done when wind velocities exceed IS miles per hour.
