UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
November 1, 1985
Mr. Lloyd Barnhart
3 Sedum Court
Pueblo, CO 81001
Dear Buck:
• This is in reference to a site investigation done October 24,
posed clay mine located in the SW 1/4, section 1, T25S, R65W,
information may be used by your company to fulfill [he requi~
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board.
1985 on a pro-
The following
;ments of the
The pre- and post-mining land use is rangeland, it is not pr a farmland,
and there should not be any groundwater problems encountered during mining.
The owner of the land is Lewis E. Edmondson. Ed Johnson (re ained by Summit
PYessed Brick 6 Tile Co.) will be responsible for the reclam lion.
The area proposed far mining is outlined on the attached sot survey map.
The area is mapped as Travessilla sandy loam, Clay deposit are found
b_2ow an overburden of Dakota Sandstone. The suitability of ravessilla for
topsoil is rated poor due to the layer being thin.
The Travessilla soils support a plant community dominated by blue grama with
significant amounts of red threeawn, sideoats P,rama, ring mu ly, and
New Mexico feathergrass. Western wheatgrass appears in areas where topsoil
depth increases, whereas New Mexico feathergrass appears in yeas where
topsoil depth decreases. A list of the existing vegetation nd specific
cover estimates are provided on the attached CO-ECS-2.
The Soil Conservation Service recommends the following steps to stabilize
the site after mining:
1) Prior co mining, all topsoil which can be reasonably rem ved should be
• stockpiled. Since outcrops of sandstone occur throughout th proposed
mining area, topsoil collection sliuuld be selective.
2) Prior to spreading the topsoil, the area should be banks oped so that
no slope exceeds 3:1 slope. F.ough areas should be smoothed o permit
easier seeding and mulching. The area should be scarified, 'f practical,
to a depth of 6 inches to permit better bonding between the topsoil and the
underlying soil material. After scarification, the topsoil s ould be uni-
formly spread over the area.
0
