Thirteen existing and nineteen unconstructed temporary stock tanks are
• proposed by the end of 1992 in the Seneca II reclamation areas. Exhibit
7-7 shows the locations of the existing tanks and proposed locations of
the unconstructed stock tanks. The tanks have been numbered for
purposes of referencing monitoring locations. The following stock tank
monitoring program is proposed to address the requirements of Rules
4.05.9 (1)(a)(b) and (d).
Part (1)(a) of Rule 4.05.9 addresses whether the quality of the
impounded water is suitable for its intended use and whether any pond
discharges would meet applicable State and Federal effluent standards.
Water quality monitoring at representative stock tanks will include
analyses for those chemical parameters for which the State of Colorado
has established livestock standards. Table 1 summarizes the complete
list of chemical parameters that will be analyzed. Water quality
sampling will be conducted on a monthly basis from June through
September. Water quality samples shall consist of a composite of
multiple samples collected spatially across the pond. Of the existing
• and unconstructed temporary stock tanks shown on Exhibit 7-7, Peabody
proposes to monitor tank numbers (T2, T5, T7, T12, T17, T25, T27, 730
and T32) for data to satisfy Rule 4.05.9(1)(a).
Part (1}(b) concerns water persistence. Monitoring for water
persistence will involve the installation of calibrated staff gages in
the deeper portions of the tanks. Multiple transects will be surveyed
through the as-built stock tank bottoms to facilitate the development of
stage-capacity curves. Water stage values read from the staff gages
will be used to calculate tank volumes over time. Water persistence
monitoring will be conducted at each of the tanks on a monthly basis
from June through September.
As the stock tanks will also provide a source of water for the local
wildlife, Peabody will periodically document during the Spring, Summer
and Fall seasons the usage of water from the tanks by wildlife.
Documentation will be in the form of number and kinds of tracks present
• around the perimeter of the tanks.
7-2-1 Revised 02/06/91
