An area immediately west of the Clark residence will be used as <br />equipment parking and fuel storage. This area is approximately 10 feet higher in <br />elevation than the present pit elevation and will be above the 100 year flood <br />level. The fuel storage area will contain above ground tanks with containment <br />pads large enough to hold more fuel than the tanks will hold when full. For <br />instance, if two 500 gallon fuel tanks are used to store fuel, then a pad 10' X SO' <br />with 2' high sides would be constructed using a neoprene double mat floor and <br />side walls. This structure would hold approximately 1500 gallons of liquid fuel. <br />Ground water will be encountered during gravel extraction operations. <br />While the water will be disturbed by excavation, nothing will be added to the <br />ground water. The ground water will not come into contact with the surface <br />waters of the Animas River and will be allowed to settle out and filter back into <br />the surrounding gravel bar. <br />The processing area will be just north of the section of the pit being <br />excavated. Processing will include crushing, screening to size, and washing. <br />Washed gravel, rock, and sand will be the end product of this operation (3/4" to <br />1~/z" rock, masonry sand, 3" to 6" rock, and large rip rap materials will all be <br />classified). No chemicals will be used in this process. Water from the pit will be <br />used for washing and allowed to return to the pit and settling pond. <br />Explosives are not expected to be used at this site. <br />The Silverton-Middleton area experiences extreme winter weather <br />conditions. Operations may be shut down for more than 180 days should an <br />extended winter season occur. Some years operations will cease for 3 to 4 <br />months while other years seasonal shut down could be longer. Most years <br />stockpile removal will occur for 10 months with a 2 month freeze up shut down. <br />The Clarks own the surface and the mineral rights to the affected land. <br />
