(TI). TI is preparing an environmental assessment of areas to be
effected by the proposed Peabody Coal Company strip mining activities.
The 100°6 survey was conducted under the Department of the Interior
Antiquities Act Permit No. 77-CO-046. The 4-40 Amendment area was
surveyed on November 3-4, 1978, by Bruce Miller, Project ~+lanager,
Gregory Holmes, and Nancy Collins, Project crew.
Tfte survey area was defined on the west by a brush cut, and an
electric fence, and on the south side by a brush cut. The north and
east boundaries were flagged.
The survey taas carried out by a series of 50 m wide east-west
sweeps. By leading off the easily defined south and west boundaries,
using a Brunton compass to keep our bearing, and keeping in good visual
and voice contact, the entire 160 ac were surveyed except for the very
steep northeast escarpment which was judged to be too steep to contain
any cultural resources.
The 4-40 Amendment area is located on a north-south ridge system.
•
The elevation of the area surveyed ranges from 7640 ft to 8000 ft. The
ridge slopes gently up to the north and east from Grassy Creek until
it reaches a narrow summit, and then slopes steeply to the south and
east into Twentyntile Park, and the Fish Creek drainage.
