from the azea in 2001.
Bear Creek Project
Reclamation at the Bear Creek Project Area was completed near the central /eastern portion of
the Old Refuse Pile during the 1999 construction season. Approximately six acres of steep slopes
were reclaimed during the course of this project.
Multiple Best Management Practices were implemented in the Bear Creek Project Area, including
the use of severe surface scarification prior to seeding, shrub planting, placement of slash barriers
and the use of silt fence.
Vegetative cover on the order of 40% was established during the 2000 growing season. Cattle
were turned onto the area, and compromised the integrity of the surface scarification pattern,
resulting in gully formation near the western margin of the Project Area. Sediment generated
from the gully formation was trapped by the silt fence and the slash barriers located at the base of
the Project Area. The gullies were repaired in the fall of 2000 by crimping weed free straw into
each of the four features, and re-establishing the surface scarification pattern at the head of the
gullies. Silt fences were maintained as needed, and seed was re-applied to the entire area.
East of Road A Project Area
Reclamation construction was completed in this area during 1999. Best Management Practices
implemented during and following reclamation construction included the use of severe surface
roughening, placement of silt fence, construction of small earthen berms and the placement of
weed free straw bales. Vegetative cover in this area was visually estimated to vary from between
30% and 50%, dependent upon the locality.
Maintenance of the silt fence and replacement of straw bales was periodically accomplished as
dictated by field conditions.
West of Road A Construction Area
Final reclamation of this area was accomplished in 1999. Again, multiple Best Management
Practices were implemented in the West of Road A Area, including severe surface roughening,
construction of small ridges built perpendicular to the fall of the small hill slope at the southern
portion of the area, silt fence placement and the use of weed free straw bales. No problems or
maintenance needs were observed in this area following multiple inspections. Vegetative cover
was visually estimated to be established at 50%.
B. The first inspection of the permitted area occurred on May 2, 2000. Comprehensive
inspections of the permit azea were made on a bi-weekly basis from early July until mid- October,
2000. Maintenance of silt fence, straw bales, and other BMP structures was accomplished at the
time of each inspection, as dictated by field conditions. The gully repair discussed in Section A,
was accomplished after the cattle were removed from the area in the fall of 2000. As an inactive
3
