O I <br />5ecretazy of the Interior Manuel Lujarr today a~uwunced that Trapper <br />Mining, Inc., !8 one of 10 national winners !n 4he fifth annual Excellence !n Surface <br />Mining Rec7emalion competitiory sponsored by Interior's Office of Surface Mining <br />Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM). <br />Trapper won the award for its reclamation and eedimenta4lon control <br />practices at t}tm Trapper Mine, near Craig, Colorado. <br />Trapper operates the mine under a permit covering about 10,D00 acres in a <br />dry climate with less than 14 inches arutual precip[tatiort. Mining and reclamation <br />to this harsh northwest Colorado environment require special sensitivity to <br />eedlmentntion problems and to the treads of cvildl[fe. <br />To control sedimentation at the siM, Trapper uses sediment basins, livestock <br />ponds, water dlvenione, anti rock shark strurturea. Trapper also used innovative <br />ideas to recreate habitat for large anirna}a an the reclatrned land, which now <br />supports irureased deer and elk populations, <br />OSM officials praised the award w[nning reclamation effort as a tribute to <br />cooperation between public agencies and the Trapper Mining Compacty. <br />Trapper jelns rilna othtar companies from Indiana, Kentucky, Montana, Ohio, <br />Waehingtnn, and Wyoming ae thL year's winners.
