<br />movement of fluids out of the solution mining interval, thereby providing <br />• protection for the overlying Upper Aquifer, including the potential USDW. <br />Potential seepage from the experimental test phase cooling/retention ponds is <br />currently monitored by well 21-2 and will occur in the future on an as-needed basis <br />(see Section 4.3). Potential leakage from the 14-acre Piceance Site evaporation pond <br />will be prevented by installation of a pond liner. <br />Due to the relatively shallow depth of the pipeline installation in the pipeline <br />corridor, no impacts to groundwater would likely occur. At stream crossings, it is <br />possible that alluvial aquifers could be impacted in the unlikely event of a pipe <br />failure or rupture (see Section 8.2). <br />The Parachute Site lies above an alluvial aquifer associated with Parachute Creek. <br />Monitoring well data at and near the Unocal facility at this location indicate that <br />groundwater depths range from 10 to 45 feet below the ground surface (ACOE 1985). <br />Potential impacts to this aquifer as a result of seepage from the evaporation pond <br />would be minimized by installation of a pond liner. <br />8.4 METEOROLOGY AND AIR QUALITY <br />8.4.1 Meteorology <br />• The Yankee Gulch Project would not result in any impacts to local or regional <br />meteorological conditions. <br />8.4.2 Air Quality <br />The proposed Yankee Gulch Project will require the installation of various <br />equipment and process facilities at both the Piceance Site and the Parachute Site. <br />These include generators, boilers, baghouses, electrostatic precipitators, dryer <br />scrubbers, and product storage bins. The proposed mining operations will impact air <br />quality to some extent, but not to such a degree as to significantly deteriorate air <br />quality. <br />Process emission sources at the Piceance Site are anticipated to include a diesel or <br />natural gas-fired emergency generator, a diesel fire water pump, and a boiler stack. <br />Process emission sources at the Parachute Site are anticipated to include a dryer <br />scrubber stack, a baghouse stack, a dryer electrostatic precipitator exhaust stack, a <br />boiler stack, a diesel or natural gas-fired emergency generator, a diesel fire water <br />pump, and secondary ventilation emission sources, including various bagger, <br />storage bin, packaging area, and loadout area dust collectors. <br />Although many of the units listed above are merely control devices for upstream <br />• pieces of equipment that actually generate the emissions, the control devices are <br />American Soda, L.L.P. 8_13 <br />Commercial Mme Plan <br />August 18, 1998 <br />
