INTRODUCTION
' During late June, 1985, Mr. Eldon Strid of ACZ INC. accompanied Rock
Castle Company personnel to the Grassy Gap Mine for the purpose of
' reviewing existing cut slopes- along- haulage and -access roads which
eit~ er exceeded the design_restriction of Rule 2.03.1 (3)(c)(i) and Rule
' 4.03.2 (3)(c)(i) according to the Rules for Coal Mining of the Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Board or which exhibit signs of_instability. The
purpose of the site review was to determine the appropriate methods for
evaluation of these slopes in response to Stipulation No. 2 from the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division (Division).
1
Rock Castle Company had previously requested review of the slope on road
cuts from Rocky Mountain Surveyors. During this work, Rocky Mountain
Surveyors determined the material type and the slope angle at various
points along all haulage and access roads to determine which slopes were
out of compliance with the Colorado Regulations. As part of the work
which ACZ INC. completed, conversations were held with Ms. Candy
Thompson and Mr. Jim Pendleton of the Division to review the Division's
requirements and to determine the necessary response to satisfy
Stipulation No. 2 of the permit document. At a meeting on July 26, 1985
with Mr. Jim Pendleton, the following general criteria was outlined for
' satisfying Stipulation No. 2.
• Map slides and areas of instability along the access and haul
roads
' • Develop type of slides and failure mechanism
• Develop plan for providing a stable reclaimed surface at each
of the slide areas
• Develop a stability analysis on the after reclamation fix (or
mitigation work)
ACZ INC. has reviewed all existing information on the Stipulation No. 2
requirements for the permit. Based on this information, the following
work has been completed:
-1-
