and it appeared to be the same size. During the January
inspection, the area was covered with 3 feet of snow but I could
tell that the area was larger than previously cited. The latest
inspection revealed the scope of the subsidence feature. I believe
that the feature will continue to grow wider and deeper based on
the configuration of the portal. There are already several surface
cracks outside the feature indicating that it will collapse within
itself.
The forfeited reclamation bond was in the amount of $11,800. All
of the bond money was used during the 1990 reclamation project.
The Division does not hold any other funds for the Sunlight Mine.
The Sunlight Mine was developed prior to 1910 by CF&I. All of the
mining operations since that time have utilized the portal location
and have utilized an incline driven down the dip of the "D" seam
for access and haulage. It remains questionable whether AML can
fund the reclamation of this portal based on the pre-law operators.
The other alternative is to go after the operators and directors of
the mine to reclaim the hole. I believe that Larry R. is currently
working on this strategy. Please let me know if you have any
questions or need additional information.
m:\coal\esc\sunlight\940401
