Lonp
~
FROM: Erica Crosby ~~ o~~,~ono~re~t~~~
RE: Sunlight Mine (C-81-046)
On Monday March 28, 1994 I conducted a partial inspection at the
Sunlight Mine. A large subsidence feature has developed at the
intake portal on the upper bench of the Sunlight Mine. The feature
is directly over the intake portal reclaimed back in 1990. The
feature is roughly 10 to 15 feet in diameter and is over 50 feet
deep. The feature may be deeper, but it was difficult to determine
from the surface. As a temporary measure, a DANGER DO NOT ENTER
sign was posted in the location of the hole. Since that time, AML
has instructed a contractor to install a fence around the hole.
The opening is less than 1500 feet from county road #117 leading to
the Sunlight Ski resort. The portal area can be seen from the
road. The gate leading to the site was removed after reclamation
of the site in 1990, so the area is accessible to the public. I
also noticed several beer and pop cans within 150 feet of the hole.
In the past, vehicles have parked in the area.
The intake portal is at a slope of 42°. The portal was sealed with
a steel backstop and concrete block wall and then backfilled with
fill material. This work was performed by Curry Construction in
1990 under contract with DMG. Please see the attached drawings of
the bid specifications of the sealing method. The hole is located
within 5 to 10 feet from the location monument, indicating the
portal seal has failed. Various pieces of rail and other debris
could be seen in the hole. This material was used as the portal
access gate and frame as noted on sheet 6 of 9 (attached) . I
believe that this feature is through the portal access gate and
frame and through the backfilled material. At this time I am not
sure of the integrity of the concrete block wall that was
installed.
May 1993 is when I first noticed some activity in the portal area.
The feature at that time was roughly 3 feet in diameter and 3 feet
deep. Photographs were taken and I continued to monitor the area.
October 1993 was the last time I saw the feature free of snow cover
