The purpose of the meeting was to inspect the Mautz property in response
to a complaint filed by the Mautz's concerning road damage due to subsidence at two
general locations on their property (refer to Mautz complaint letter dated July 10, 1996).
After meeting briefly at 9:00 a.m. to discuss the agenda for the day, the inspection
proceeded to several locations on the Mautz Ranch. Refer to Coal Inspection Report dated
7/23/96 for a description of each location inspected. Larry Mautz rode with me in my
vehicle and Fadra Mautz rode with Norm Every of MCC in his vehicle.
After visiting a location where large surface cracks crossed the jeep trail that we had been
driving on, we parked the vehicles near a steep drainage where aspen trees were blocking
the jeep trail. Larry said that this is where Norm would need his chain saw to get us
through, so that at this point we would need to walk for about a mile to see the rest of the
damage that he wanted to show us. We walked for an undetermined distance down a
drainage, when Larry suddenly stopped and turned to Fadra instructing her to take us back
to the vehicles. He instructed her to take us "all the way around and meet him down here
and then we would proceed up downhill only road". To the best of my knowledge our
general location was approximately South 1/2 Section 24, Township 13 South, Range 91
West. Fadra changed her mind on the way back to the vehicles on how she wanted to
proceed and yelled back to her father (Larry) but got no response. We proceeded to get
back into the vehicles and drove up to the top of a ridge (what I believe to be Jumbo
Mountain) and then drove down "downhill only road".
We drove for approximately one hour and arrived back at the exact same location where
we had left Larry, it was now approximately 1:30 p.m. Larry was nowhere to be found.
Fadra tried to follow his footprints and we called out his name for several minutes but got
