Long
Division Director
The Colorldo Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG-, Durango field office, has reviewed
the project: description for the Dalton Pit, public notice number 199475346, and offers
the following comments for consideration.
DMG has not identified any major concerns with the mine plan proposed in the project
descriptiorl for the Dalton Pit. DMG concerns and reclamation plan requirements can be
adequately addressed by the operator through the Technical Revision and/or Amendment
process for the existing Colorado reclamation permit. One of the key issues to be
addressed by the operator regards clarification of the maximum depth of extraction in
relation to the channel bottom elevation. Current depth restriction for the Dalton Pit is
defined by the surface elevation of the river. Additionally, DMG will probably require
development and implementation of an appropriate river channel survey and continuation
of a monitlxing program to verify that no significant adverse impacts to river channel
stability are occurring as a result of gravel extraction activities.
DMG's exFlerience with SANDCO, Inc., indicates that the operator complies with
Colorado n~clamation statutes. Mining activities conducted by SANDCO, Inc., have
continuou:;ly exhibited a corporative attitude with regulatory requirements and an
awareness of environmental responsibility.
Please contact me at the DMG field office in Durango, 1474 Main Avenue, Room 207,
Durango, CO 81301-5182, phone (970) 247-5062, if I can be of greater service.
Sincerely,
Wallace H. Erickson
Environmental Protection Specialist
