Reporting Period August 12, 1997 -August 17, 1997.
Current Schedule
A gantt chart of the schedule and progress of genera] construction activities for the project is
attached. Other specific tasks of interest are as follows:
Main Crossing (Wall F-1 and F-2) In Progress Complete 9/12
Cut Slopes above Shaft #1 and #2 Complete
Pond SG-1 and Main Drainage In Progress Complete 9/15
Landing #2 Road Complete
Water Tank Extension Indefinite Hold
Lower Sylvester Gulch Road Begin 8/27 Complete 9/20
Field Monitoring and Observations
2
A complete field inspection was conducted Friday, August 15, 1997, and Sunday, August 17,
1997, to visually observe and evaluate the stability of slopes within the project area. Data
collection efforts and evaluation or re-evaluation of specific areas of concern continues.
Individual areas are discussed in detail in the following sections. Supporting documentation is
attached for your review.
RPE: No movement, slumping, or cracking has been observed on any finished or in-progress
slope at the RPE since the beginning of the project in late May.
Lower Svlvester Gulch Road: Observation of the cut slopes and other disturbed slopes
adjacent to widened sections of the Lower Sylvester Gulch Road showed no failures or
slumping on August 15. A fourth reading at inclinometer I-2 was taken, and movement
remains slower than anticipated. Monitoring and evaluation of I-2 will continue. Golder
Associates is completing re-analysis of the slopes at and around inclinometer I-4 and has
begun redesign of the lower road from Station 20 through Station 34. Preliminary redesign of
this section includes flatter slopes (2:1 vs. I.5:1) and a shift in alignment further away from
the creek, which will eliminate MSE Walls B and C.
Upper Svlvester Gulch Road: No failures, movement, or new cracking were observed at the
failed fill area (Stations #62 to #68) on August 15 or August 17. All other pioneered sections
of the main road appeared stable, including both approaches to the main crossing (F-walls).
Monitoring of inclinometer I-12 at the failed fill area continues to show small movements at
approximately 6' to 10' below ground surface (BGS). Surface surveys continue to indicate no
appreciable movement either above the cut slope or below the fill area. Representatives from
Golder Associates and Barr Engineering were on site on August 13 to inspect the area and
observe the opening of Shelby tubes taken during I-11 and I-12 installation. Test pits have
been postponed pending discussions with CDMG on the need for a minor revision for this
work. The Shelby tubes were logged by both Golder and Barr, and some were repackaged
for further laboratory analysis. Notable observations include the Shelby tube sample from 6'-
