If you should be involved in an accident, secure the scene from tampering until an investigation has been
completed.
If it becomes necessary for you to evacuate an area because of an emergency such as fire, follow the
emergency evacuation maps posted throughout the mine site to reach a safe gathering area. Do not
leave the area until a member of the Colowyo Safety Department releases you.
If a fire occurs in your work area, and you are trained to do so, you may use any of the fire extinguishers
placed around the mine site to extinguish the fire. Notify others in the area of the presence of a fire prior
to attempting to extinguish it. Take used (including partially used) fire extinguishers to the warehouse for
replacement immediately after use.
DO NOT TRAVEL TO THE AREA OF AN EMERGENCY FOR ANY REASON. ADDITIONAL TRAFFIC
AND CONGESTION CAUSES CONFUSION AND DELAYS IN DEALING WITH THE SITUATION.
MINE AREA SPECIFIC GUIDELINES
Safety rules have been established for different areas of the mine. These rules specifically address
concerns located in these areas. You must follow these specific rules whenever you are in the areas
listed below.
GOSSARD LOADOUT AREA:
1. Large mining equipment is often operating in this area. Pay strict attention to the movement of
this equipment and never park near operating equipment unless the operator is aware of your
intentions. Use POSITIVE COMMUNICATIONS.
2. Because of high noise levels, you must wear hearing protection in many areas.
3. Stockpiles in the area limit visibility. Use caution when traveling in this area.
4. Stockpiles can collapse and bury personnel and equipment. Never stand on top of, or near the
base of a stockpile.
5. The high concentration of moving machinery in this area presents many hazards. Never work in
close proximity to machinery such as conveyor belts unless the machinery has been locked out.
Additionally, loose clothing, jewelry or long hair must be restrained when you are working in this
area.
6. The presence of methane and coal dust can be a fire hazard. All electrical equipment used in this
area must be approved by MSHA for use unless a "HOT WORK PERMIT" has been completed
and all recommendations followed.
SHOPS AND WAREHOUSE
1. Numerous vehicles travel in these areas. Drive with care.
2. When driving by equipment access doors, drive as far away as possible. Equipment backing out
of the door could strike your vehicle.
3. Before entering a shop area, look right, left, up and down for hazards. This extra moment taken
to look may prevent an accident.
4. Be aware of foot placement as there are a larger number of tripping hazards in this area.
