3
this would disturb the least azea. He said this
was all right as long as we kept the gate closed,
as there were a lot of cattle. We did keep the
gate closed or in view during the job, but never
saw one cow in the azea during the entire job.
July 15, 1993- Friday- Spoke with Dr. Corley by phone in late
afternoon-(began leaving message but he picked
up answering machine). Informed him that we
were about done with the drilling phase of the
job, and went over our latest findings about the
nature and location of the fire. Discussed the
remaining work to be done the following week,
including reclamation of drill sites and access
roads, as well as the backfilling of all the
subsidence holes and cracks that we had located
or ]mew of. He stated that he appreciated being
kept abreast of the progress, and that he felt I
had proceeded in a logical and intelligent
manner". I thanked him for this compliment.
July 20, 1993= 'Iliesday-Final reclamation of sites begins. I left
a phone message with Dr. Corley stating that we
were doing final reclamation, and would be
selecting a backfill source. I stated that we would
not be using any of the topsoil stockpiles, nor
would we disturb any reclaimed azeas. I lefrmy
field telephone number, and asked that he call if
he had any questions or concerns. I located a
source of clayey spoil suitable for backfill
material in the unreclaimed azea at the northern
edge of the old fire trench, also known as the
,. "Orphan Pit". It was my understanding that this
area was to be extensively regraded and
reclaimed under a bond-revocation project
administered by the Coal Program within a
month or so. I needed about 40 to 50 cu. yds. of
backfill. I called Erica Crosby on the field phone
and asked her if this amount would be a problem
for the materials balance or in any way cause a
problem for the reclamation plan. She said she
did not believe it would, but wanted to check
with Larry first. I called back later, and Erica
