-zo-

qi t4 respect to surface water quality, a ?ortion of the operation is required
to 3e ccntained within a sedimentation system. ~unoff from the mine bench
and the waste disposal piles will be routed through sediment ponds. These
areas present the greatest potential for affecting water quality because of the
exposure of subsurface materials and the Iv.gh level of activity associated with
these areas.
Total suspended sediment concentrations will be ati.nimized by passing water from
disturbed areas through sediment ponds which are designed to remove and contain
suspended solids. Total dissolved solids concentrations will slightly increase
as 3 :'eSUlt of runoff from the disturbed areas. It is felt that t_he runoff from
most storm events will not result in discharge from the sediment ponds
due to the limited catchment area involving the area of disturbance,
therefore will not affect the total dissolved solids concentration in the
receiving stream.
.f the operation experienced a ;torn requiring discharge from the ponds, r.4e
total dissolves soli as concentrat_on would be diluted by water from
undisturbed areas in the natural channel. The disturbed area (JS acres) accounts
for approximately seven-tenths of a percent of c4e drainage area (5,085
acres) of :sunger Canyon. This relationship provides a rough estimate of ehe
extent to whi G4 dilution would occur, c-urther:nore, the disturbed area in
.YVnger Canyon comprises five-hundredths of one percent of the total drainage
area of East Sa1C Creek above toe confluence with .MVnger Canyon (67,288 acresl.
Further dilution would occur by the time the runoff from the disturbed area
• - reaches the alluvial valley floor.
Of the 35 acres to be disturbed by the operation, aaptoximately 3.4 acres is
required to be crontroZled by sedimentation ponds. The rest oz the disturbance
will consist of the haul road. The amount of area essentiallu removed `rpm
tae drainage of :longer Canyon due to containment within t::e operation's
sedimentation system is approximately B.4 acres. ^4is accounts for less than
two-tenths of a percent of drainage area of Alunger Canyon and less than two-
hundredths of a percent of n4e drainage area of .Bast Salt Creek. Obviously,
the reduction of such a small amount of the drainage area will result in an
insignificant reduction of sur.°ace f-'cw tributary to tre alluvial Talley door.
All surface runoff retained by the structures will eventually be returned to
the stream system.
:YO ground water was encountered :+i`_4ia teal seams and their associated roof
and door strata dvriac exploratory drilling in the .ni.ne pion area.
The applicant does not anti ci?ate any significant .^dne Znf_'cw which :round
recuire discharging of .av.ne water. ,longer Canyor. a an ephemeral stream. __
This stream's f10W is not sustained by ;round water durino Zow flcw ?eriods
throuch sprzacs ant see?s. :` c:e :v..ae were to ex?er:ence .nine :allows, t;^e
'round :racer depleted iron the :_ydrelogic -cstem :+ould net ~e szctific3nt.
_t4ere?ore, the de?1e t:cn of ground cater ;Dili not impact .~e quant_tu c. :Dater
___JU C3 ry _„ t.".e ail^7i al 'Jdllay fl co r.
r
L
