YANKEE GULCH SODIUM MINERALS PROJECT
PIPELINE INFORMATION SUMMARY
1
1.0 PROJECT PURPOSE AND NEED
American Soda, L.L.P. (American Soda) proposes a mining operation involving
t development of vertical solution mining wells for the extraction of bedded and
disseminated nahcolite. The project is known as the Yankee Gulch Sodium
Minerals Project (Yankee Gulch Project). The proposed mining development
' would occur on the Yankee Gulch Joint Venture Leases (the Piceance Site),
which are located in the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) White River
Resource Area near Meeker, Colorado, and are controlled by American Soda.
' Associated processing facilities would be located at the Piceance Site and in the
Parachute Creek valley near Parachute, Colorado (the Parachute Site).
' The two sites would be connected by a 44-mile-long pipeline corridor, which
would contain a sodium products pipeline rlrnning from the Piceance Site to the
Parachute Site and a parallel return water pipeline running from the Parachute
' Site to the Piceance Site. The pipeline corridor route is indicated on Figure 1-1.
This document describes the methods and materials to be used for construction
of the two Yankee Gulch Project pipelines.
American Soda intends to install the Yankee Gulch Project pipelines in full
accordance with regulatory and industry guidelines. American Soda has
' proposed a start date for construction and installation of the pipelines of no
earlier than January 1, 2000, and a completion date of November 1, 2000.
' 1.1 Proposed Pipeline Route
The proposed pipeline route and general land ownership along the route are
shown on Figure 1-2. Figures 1-3a through 1-3h show the pipeline route in more
detail, with topographic information. The pipeline route from the Piceance Site
' to the Parachute Site is described as follows. From the Piceance Site processing
facility, the pipeline travels southeast to Horse Draw, which it progresses down
to cross Piceance Creek at the existing Horse Draw/Marathon Oil Company road
' crossing (a distance of 2 miles). It then crosses Rio Blanco County Road 5 near
the mouth of Hatch Gulch. The pipeline follows Hatch Gulch southeast along
the valley floor until it meets an existing natural gas liquids (ngl) pipeline
t corridor (a distance of 4.5 miles), which it parallels due east to the Greasewood
Compressor Station (approximately 2 more miles).
' From the Greasewood Compressor Station, the Yankee Gulch Project pipeline
corridor parallels an existing three-party ngl corridor that includes pipelines
operated by Northwest Pipeline, Colorado Interstate Gas (CIG), and Barrett
Resources. This pipeline corridor trends southeast for approximately 2 miles
Pipeline Wormanon Summary I
YaNree GWch Sodium Minerals Proles
' American Soda, LLP.
