Dept. of N2'.'•;: a: ;...:. ,~.~ c~.
This letter references the Permit Application for Surface Coal Mining and
Reclamation Operations (No. C-033-81) submitted by Bear Coal Company in
February, 1981 and revised in May, 1981 for Bear No. 1 and No. 2 Mines. The
mines are located in Gunnison County, Colorado. As shown in Attachment A,
Surface Ownership Map taken from Bear's Permit Application, Atlantic Richfield
owns that portion of the S/2 S/2 of Section 9 lying south of the North Fork of the
Gunnison River (and which tract is also described as Lots 1, 2, and 3) and that part
of the SW/4 SW/4 of Section 9 lying south of the North Fork of the Gunnison River;
all of Section 16; Lots 1, 17, 20, and 22 of Section 21 (sometimes also described as
Lot 1, the E/2 of Lot 2, the NE/4 of Lot 7, and the N/2 of Lot 8), all within Bear's
designated five-year permit boundary. Thus, as owners of land to be reclaimed by
the Bear mine operations, Atlantic Richfield has a significant interest in how the
area is to be reclaimed.
By way of this letter, Atlantic Richfield requests that, with the exception of the
temporary stockpile area discussed below, all Atlantic Richfield-owned surface
disturbed by the Bear Mine operations be reclaimed by Bear Coal Company for fish
and wildlife habitat. Reclamation of this area to be performed by Bear Coal
Company should include at a minimum:
(1) removal of all surface structures including, but not limited to,
buildings, foundations, trackage owned by Bear, r_onveyors, storage
facilities, and bridges; and
(2) removal of all scrap material; and
(3) regrading and recontouring of all disturbed areas including access roads;
and
(4) redistribution of topsoil; and
(5) revegetation of the entire area and a plan for assuring success;
in addition to such other reclamation requirements imposed by law.
naco coal ro~,n~~, ie: ni.nn.,, ,,i •mnuc m. m~•mc„moa,.,
