FROM GREG-LEWICKI FRX N0. 3036299335 Jun. 12 2001 02:21 PM P3
that fell within the site was given a number, starting in the uppermost left corner and
labeled left to right then by row downward to the last point in the lowermost right
corner. This resulted itt 44 points within the sample site area. A random number
generator was then used to gclterate 44 random numbers. These random numbers were
then sorted descending and that sorted by the 4S points. This generated random order of
sample points within the sample site. For instance, the uppermost left comer was grid
point one and when sorted against the random numbers became sample site 14, grid
point? bea~me samrple site 34 etc.
. Sample points will be located in the field
through the use of a compass and pacing. Cover transacts will originate from sample
point locations. Sampling wit! start with sample point '1 and continue through ascending
sample points ulttil sampling adequacy is reached. Fot production sampling, in which a
much greater number of samples will need to be collected, sample locations will be
drawn from a smeller (25x25 ft) grid using the same methodology. Approximate
sample locations will be marked on a ACAD map. Sample procedures will be discussed
with the Division prior to initiating any sampling program.
Total Vegetative Cover:
Total vegetative cover will be estimated using an laser optiea! point ftamc~rpoirrt-laser.
Point strings will be located along a 25 meter trausect stretched out eithernorth,
northwest, northeast, east, southwest, west, south or southeast of the sample location
(the direction was randomly selected from among the eight four possibilities such that
selection was regenerated if necessary until it fell entixcly within the sample site
The 50 pointy per trausect (ten ene points perpendicular to the transe;et at10 cm intervals
every S half meter interval of transact slatting at S meters) will comprise a single
sample unit. Cover will be identified by species, or as rock, litter, or haze ground. For
the purposes of estimating total vegetative cover, only first hit data will be used.
Total Herbaceous Production:
In the reclaimed area, plots will be 1/2 meter by 1/2 meter in size. All current
annual herbaceous production inside the production plots will be clipped, separated
according to life form, and bagged. The four life forms will include perennial grasses,
perennial forbs, annual species, and noxious weeds. Production data will not be the
basis of species diversity, and therefore sorting by species is unnecessary. All
production samples will be oven dried at 110 degrees Fahrenheit to a constant weight.
Biennial species will be included with annual species.
