The West Pit will approach the East Pit in size. Mining in the West Pit will advance from north
to south, pazalleling the movement of the adjacent East Pit. Projected life of the West Pit is
estimated to be yeaz 2010 (Drawing 23, 8/14/01).
The Section 16 Pit is located south of the East and West Pits. The northern boundary of the
Section 16 Pit will eventually be merged with these two south-trending pits. Mining of the
Section 16 Pit is of the "X" coal seam only_ Mining was from east to west, but was reoriented
from north to south for the fmal strip in the azea. The projected life of the Section 16 Pit is
estimated to end in yeaz 2002.
A scraper operation, supplemented with dozer, loader and truck haul, strips topsoil ahead of
overburden removal: Stripped topsoil is hauled directly to graded- spoil azeas on the trailing edge
of the pits, or to topsoil storage piles for later distribution during reclamation.
Blasting fractures overburden and interburden. The rubble overburden from the top three to four
seams in the advancing edges of the East and West Pits is removed bytruck-and-shovel
operations. This material is hauled azound the active pit and dumped into the active pits on the
trailing side. Blast casting (with. explosives) and draglines aze used for the removal of rubble
overburden above the lower seams, in both the East and West Pits, and was used in the Section
16 Pit. Initial box-cut material from the East Pit was placed in the. Streeter Fill. Initial box~ut
material fromthe West Pit was placed in the WestPit permanent excess spoil fill. Initial hox-cut
material from the Section 16 Pit was placed in the Section 16 Fill.
Coal Production
Extraction of coal is projected to contimre untrl theyeaz 2010_ Pmdudion during 2002 was
expected to be 8 million tons. An estimated 40 nullion tons is anticipated for 2003 to 2007 Table
3, Section 2.05-1, PAP). Production in any one year over the next 5 yeazs is not expected to
exceed 9 million tons (CDPHE Construction Permit 95MF1040, Exhibit 8, PAP).
Recovered coat is trucked to a prurrary crusher and. coal stockpile located just north of the East
Pit. From there coal is trucked to a secondary crusher and coal stockpile located approximately
four miles north at the Gossazd Loadout. Stoker coal is crushed, stored and loaded sepazately
from other coal. atthe loadout_ Boar types.of coal are shippedio.customers by rail. Ia addition,
coal may be hauled from the crushers or the loadout area by flock tv State Highway l 3.
Disposal of Wastes
There is no washing of coal product at the site. Non-coal solid wastes aze placed in designated
zones (minirnum of twenty-five feet of overburden, off the bottom, of pits during backfill
operations. Recoverable oil, grease, and other lubricants aze stored and shipped to recycle
facilities. Sanitary wastes aze disposed of in septic tanks, leach fields and evaporative ponds.
(4.11.4, PAP)
October 21, 2002 18
