.~
and she is concerned that the mine will be reclaimed. She has attended a Board
hearing and is active. She should be contacted periodically.
Ms. Barbara Stratman
10458 COUNTY RD 730
GUNNISON, CO 81230
641-0032 if no answer, 641-0038
The Pond The pond is way over sized, this is based professional judgment and years of
and Ditches observation. The pond has never discharged and I have never seen more than 1
foot of water in the bottom or less than 10% of capacity.
Only one ditch is a chronic problem. The main ditch located just up the slope from
the pond has a gentle grade and coal fine tend to settle out here. This requires
cleaning generally twice a year. The other ditches on site sometimes catch rocks
from the embankment.
Because of the high elevation of the mine, >9000 feet, the ground is snow covered
from early December through May. The mine is on a south facing slope and during
sunny periods snow melt can be rapid.
There is one topsoil pile for the disturbed area. No topsoil had been salvaged from
Topsoil Pile the pre-law disturbed area. The topsoil in the pile was salvaged from the pond
construction. This pile blends into the east side of the pond embankment and is
signed. The vegetative cover on this pile is excellent.
The Division holds a bond of $37,700; this bond is a cash bond and has accrued
Bond interest since it was deposited. The operator salvaged a good amount of
equipment from the mine in the summer of 1994 and this reduced the liability. The
bond belongs to the Gunnison First National Bank.
CRAIG KAFFENBERGER
THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF
GUNNISON
201 NORTH MAIN STREET
GUNNISON, CO 81230
!995 Inspection The midterm review completed early in 1995 requires the operator to submit:
and Permitting 1) a TR for the inclusion of about 8 acres into the permit area as an
Strategy incidental boundary.
2) a TR for discontinuing water monitoring at the Nu mine.
3) a MR for committing to a time schedule for site reclamation.
The operator is not knowledgeable about the regulations and may have to be
familiarized with the requirements of the regulations and commitments in the
permit. The operator should be meet to discuss the reclamation plan and the need
to maintain the sediment control system before the site is reclaimed.
