Threatened and Endangered Species Reminder
Rationale - Prior to permit approval, the Colorado Mining and Land Reclamation
Division (2ff.RD) and the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) must make and support
findings on species protected by the Endangered Species Act. Therefore, each
permit application must contain accurate and complete information about the
potential occurrence of threatened and endangered (T and E) species on and
adjacent to the permit area. This reminder is designed to assist you is
collecting the necessary information with the least amount of time and
effort. If you follow the steps listed below your permit application will
contain meaningful information that can be reviewed and assessed quickly.
Step 1: PRIOR to any field vork, contact the Field Supervisor, U. S, Fish and
Wildlife Service (FWS), Endangered Species, 125 South State Street,
Salt Lake Citp, UT 84138, phone (801) 524-Sb34. Explain the
location of your mine using county, township, range and section
numbers, and request the following:
a) a current Iist of T and E species for this location;
b) recommended survey methods for the listed and proposed species;
c) existing reports, survey results, etc. applicable, and;
d) names and addresses of people recognized as experts on these
species.
Step 2: Document your coordination vich the F4T5 and collect/assemble the data
on the listed species relative to your mine.
Step 3: Using the survey results and related information, eaplain how your
operation will affect the species on the FSIS list. If your operation
will not affect these species, provide reasons why not, e.g „ a
species is an occasional migrane through the area. Present your
assessment is your permit application and reference all coordination
with the EWS, recognized experts,, etc.
That is all that is required of you under normal circumstances. In unusual
cases, there may be a need for future surveys but C.~II.RD and OSM will inform
you if such surreys are necessary. In rare instances, there may be a need to
discuss alternatives to potential impacts. Your accurate and complete
information will identify such conflicts at the earliest possible data for
prompt attention and resolution.
3190A
