\ /
iv.i:~i}
energy fuels corporation '~~~~~ ~~~.~ ~
~~
Mr. Allen F. {Yhitaker _;y~:;
Mr. {Yilliam D. Clark
October 2, 1981
Page Two
i
parturition. This would make our sample size quite small; however,
we may be able to increase it for ~i number of reasons. Discussion
with mike Bell revealed that a number of their mortalities were
probably the result of stress caused by helicopter chase and capture.
Our capture methods would eliminate this type of stress. Also,
mortalities in the New Mexico study occurred within twenty-four hours,
so these units could be recovered and used in other elk. Finally,
a student, Erik Jorgensen who worked with us this spring and summer,
would like to use this project, if approved, as a research project
for his masters program. He may be able to get funding for additional
vaginal telemetry units. Also, vaginal units can be refurbished at
minimal cost once recovered, so can be reused in successive years.
All of this will, serve to increase our sample size.
Because of the relative newness of this technique, we have
included in the appendix, the information we have concerning vaginal
telemetry surgical technique.
If the vaginal telemetry alternative is not acceptable, we would
still propose the elimination of conventional collars and the use of
a few additional radio collars in their place.
Also, as in the past, all elk trapped incidental to capturing
adult cows will be ear tagged.
If the vaginal telemetry proposal is acceptable, we will need
the temporary assistance of a veterinarian. If the CDO{Y has any
veterinarians working with them or if you know of any willing to
donate some time to this kind of project, please let us know.
The modifications of the elk study presented herein have been
approved, in concept, by Sandy Emrich and Herb Conley subject to the
approval of the CDO{Y.
{Ye would appreciate a decision as soon as possible so that we will
have the necessary lead time to order and obtain our telemetry
equipment.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please call me.
Yours very truly,
ENERGY FUELS CORPORATION
Terrell K.
