Sandy Emrich (Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Division) and Herb Conley (Bureau of Land Management)
were in attendance. At that time, the results of our first year's
data were discussed. A copy of our annual report has been sent to
you. Also discussed was our propos~il to modify the elk study.
As we have previously discussed with you, our first year's results
show that the 70 conventional collars we put on elk provided very
little data of value to our study ot~jective. The current study plan
calls for us to capture and collar 50 adult cow elk during each of the
1981-82 and 1982-83 winter seasons. Fifteen of these elk were to
receive radio collars and thirty-five were to receive conventional
collars each year. We propose the elimination of all conventional
collars because of the lack of data they are providing with regard to
the study objective. In their place, we propose the use of vaginal
telemetry in a minimum of ten of the fifteen elk which receive radio
collars each year. This would be affordable because of the savings
gained by not having to handle so many elk and would add some valuable
information to our study by enabling us to locate parturition sites
and identify their characteristics. It would also give us some more
information on the productivity of displaced elk and help us determine
whether or not the elk are using dirt birth beds as suggested by
John W. Seidel "Elk Calving Behavior in West Central Colorado."
Vaginal telemetry involves
and minor surgery to implant the
would be some mortality. Also,
(see Appendix: Letter from Mike
and Fish). Therefore, we could
vaginal units to be successfully
the use of tranquilizers (M99, Rompun)
telemetry units.
