_'
Radio Transmittered Gow Elk). One transmittered elk was legally harvested
' and one was illegally farvested. Only one of the four transmitter failures
Iras been confirmed. However, the unconfirmed failures exceeded the
' guaranteed battery life of the transmitter so were anticipated transmitter
failures.
No collars were received from conventionally collared or ear tagged elk.
1
Productivity
Helicopter classification counts were conducted during July to obtain
cow;calf ratios (Table 5, Elk Productivity). As in the past, elk were
classified on three surface coal mines (CYCC-Mine 1, Pittsburg EMidway-Edna
' Mine, Peabody-Seneca Mine) and three comparable control areas (Middle
Creek, Quarry Mountain, Thorpe Mountain). Average cow:calf ratios for the
mine and control sites were 60 and 58 per 100 cows respectively for 1987.
' Irr addition, elk were classified in two areas at higher elevations (Little
Flat Tops and Dunckley Flat Tops). The average cow:calf ratio was 53
calves per 100 cows.
' Calving Horne Range Size
' The average calving home range size based on six locations per elk between
May 15 and June 30, 1987 was 360 acres (Table 6, Minimum Home Range Size
' During Calving 1987). This is very close to that reported in the 1985
completion report, Table 13: mine 352 acres and control 512 acres.
' Calving Home Range Fidelity
' Fidelity to calving home ranges was also similar to that reported in the
1985 completion report. Calving borne range overlap averaged 57$ (Table 7).
Linear distance between consecutive season activity centers of general home
' ranges averaged .45 rniles (Table ti).
1
- 3 -
