1
the area of general observations extend as far as 20* miles from the mine
' covering the movements of elk tagged on the mine. The specific location of
the LMCT can be found on the enclosed maps showing elk movements. Amore
detailed description of the area is found in the 1985 Completion Report.
' METHODS
No trapping was done during this period. Monitoring was done primarily with
' fixed wing aircraft to locate transmittered animals. Helicopter
classification surveys were conducted to determine elk productivity.
' Calving home ranges were determined using Mohr's (1947) minimum convex
polygon method. Calving home range fidelity was compared by examining
amount of overlap between home ranges in consecutive years and by comparing
distance between year to year calving home range activity centers
("ariti~metic mean center", Dixon and Chapman, 1980; "geometric center",
kl
1975
H
bi
li
i
V
d
d b
l
h
anWin
e,
).
tat uti
zation was
eterm
a ne
y ca
culating t
e
percentage of transmittered elk locations within each vegetation type.
' Details for all of the above methods are given in the 1985 Completion Report.
' RESULTS
t Monitoring
' Monitoring between August 1,1986 and July 31, 1987 of 18 transmittered elk
yielded 253 locations (Table 1, Monthly Summary of Transmittered Elk
Locations, and Table 2, Yearly Summary of Transmittered Elk Locations).
' Locations of 12 of these elk have been mapped (Tables 13 - 24 and associated
maps). Six elk with transmitters were not mapped due to early mortality or
' transmitter failure (Table 12). There were also fourteen locations of
conventionally collared, ear tagged and previously failed transmitter
' collared elk (Tables 1 and 11).
' Mortality
During the current reporting period (August 1, 1986 to July 31, 1987) six
' transmitters were lost or failed. Two of these are attributed to
mortalities and four to transmitter failure (Table 3, Mortality and Fate of
' -2-
1
