The identical bills are numbered 5.443 and H. R. 941.
Efforts are underway to schedule at least one hearing in the
Judiciary Committees of both Senate and House of Representatives.
It is believed that adequate record of the need for such
legislation has been made in extensive hearings in the 98th and
99th Congresses, and that one hearing should be sufficient to
allow an examination of the bill as it now stands and how it
would work.
The agenda, however, also includes other legislation of
interest to our members: Clean Air Act revisions that address the
problem of acid rain; Fuel Use Act (formally, Powerplant end
Industrial Fuel Use Act, or PIFUA) revision or repeal; modification
or repeal of PURPA, the "Public Utility Regulatory Policy Act";
proposed increase in the Black Lung tax, end amendments to the
Mineral Leasing Act regarding coal leasing and coal royalties.
We are, of course, working with APPA and NRSCA wherever
possible, and will make Western Fuels' view on these matters
known to the appropriate committees, end will seek to testify or
file statements in support of Western Fuels' position when it
appears in our best interests to do so.
Magruder Building
1625 M Sneer, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20036
Telephone 207/463-6580
Telecopier 202!223-8790
•
