~'

-4-

be impacted should occur in less habitat and area. The efficacy
of nitrogen fertilizer as a mitigation practice for sage grouse habitats
will be evaluated. Recommendations for the most effective application
design will also be a product.
Approach
1. Continue review of available literature concerning fertilization
of sagebrush rangelands.
2. Continue review of available literature concerning sage grouse,
nutritive demands of grouse, responses of grouse to fertilizer,
and techniques adaptable to studies of upland game birds.
3. Continue intensive counts (2-3 per week) of males on the 6 known
leks (Denmark, Raven, Prague, Canuck, Perdiz, Pronghorn) and
other known leks (_ 30) (minimum of 4 times each breeding season)
in North Park from -. 20 March to ~ 31 May.
4. Continue banding samples of male and female sage grouse throughout
North Park to achieve samples of at least 50 males in each of 4
quadrats. Grouse will be located where they roost by spot lighting
and will be trapped with long handled nets. Some trapping of hens
with cannon nets on leks may be necessary. Birds trapped will be
banded with serially numbered aluminum bands and color coded (year)
bandettes, A sample of 20% of the high spring count of males is
desirable for each of the 6 leks in the area to be impacted.
5. Population size will be estimated utilizing counts of males present
on leks, established patterns of lek attendance and known sex ratios,
and ratios of banded to unbanded birds in harvest samples.
