I
CNAPTERFIVE eummawe ~muacts t
TransColorado Pipeline
The TransColorado pipeline is currently under construction. It will be 306 miles long and will
transport 300 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. The pipeline route begins approximately
2.5 miles south of the proposed Yankee Gulch Piceance Site and will extend south to neaz the '
Colorado-New Mexico state line (Figure 5-1). The following information is summarized from
the EIS prepazed for this project (BLM 1992).
Key project components/activities include:
• Pipeline construction within a 75-foot-wide ROW, and a permanent ROW of 50 feet in
width. The total disturbance area is 2,782 acres. '
• Construction of six new compressor stations, each requiring disturbance of approximately
five acres, and six meter stations, each requiring disturbance of approximatel:~ one-quarter
acre.
• Employment of approximately 1,440 workers during the construction phase, and
approximately 20 workers for operation of the pipeline and ancillary facilitiese.
Most impacts aze related to construction of the pipeline and will be short term in duration. The
ROW will be graded back to original contour, erosion control devices installed, and revegetation
will be accomplished to meet specific federal, state, or private landowner requirements.
Colorado Interstate Gas Pipeline '
The Colorado Interstate Gas Pipeline (CIG) was completed and in service by mid-1996. It is a
37-mile long, 16-inch natural gas pipeline from the Roan Cliff Meter Station in Garfield County
to the Greasewood Compressor Station approximately nine miles south of the Pic:eance Site
(Figure 5-1). The pipeline and adjunct facilities deliver up 90 million cubic feet of gas per day
from leases in the Pazachute, Rifle, and DeBeque azeas to the interstate mazketinl; system. The
following information is summarized from the environmental assessment (EA) prepared for this
project (CIG 1995).
Key project components/activities include:
• A 50-foot permanent ROW. ,
• A meter station on about one-quarter acre, fora 3-acre equipment staging aze~s, and cathodic
protection.
• A total azea of long-term disturbance of about 237 acres. 1
The ROW has been reclaimed with a variety of grass and forb species.
Colorado Oil and Gas Leasing and Development
A recent Draft Supplemental EIS (DSEIS) addresses potential development of oia and gas
resources, including coal-bed methane development, in the study azea over the next twenty yeazs
(BLM 1998). The study azea included all public lands and mineral estate within five Colorado
BLM resource areas but focused on an azea called Region 4 which has the highest potential for ~•
5-2 '
