(which can not be readily identified as separate species when intermixed) should
be, and have been, established at RI between 2 and 407. The potential problem
is that of establishing a second cool-season grass species at RI of 2 to 4GJ.
Coors should propose that the combined RI of the four introduced species used as
a substitute for needleandthread should be considered as a single component in
meeting the requirement. Ideally, the four introduced species xould provide a
combined RI of about 6%, but no one of the £our would exceed 2%.
To provide the forb component, the revised seed mixture includes alfalfa, cicer
milk.vetch and bractless stickleaf, Consider, once again, Table 2.04,10(4 as
proposed for revision on page 2. 4Jestern ragweed, which is an invader, had an
RI of Ef%, but Coors certainly doesn't ~aant to replace that undesirable species.
Othero-rise, four non-invader type (orbs had AI of 1% each, and these are the species
for which Coors will substitute alfalfa, ciczr milkvetch and bractless stickleaf.
Ideally, the three substitutes would provide a combined RI of about 4% with none
of the three exceeding 2~. Consequently, Coors should propose that the combined
RI of the three fortis should be considered as a single component in meeting the forb
requirement.
I have discussed these problems on the basis that the RI range of 3 to 40% might
be changed to a range of 2 to 4~, as supported by Table 2.04,10(4), However,
Coors need not he greatly concerned about whether the minimum RI is 2 or 3"J.
Confidence limits for a binomial distribution, even at 95o probability with a
sample size of 250, make these minimal RI about equally attainable. These
confidence limits, along with details of sample size and data interpretation,
should be included in the new draft of Section 2.04,10(4)e Species Diversity.
Sincerely,
71.7~~r-d~vz,
t.'
D.
