Dept. of Natural Resource
Attached is a copy of a letter dated June 14 to Coors from our
vegetation consultant, Mr. Don Hyder. The letter furnishes us with
response to the species diversity evaluation requirement proposed
earlier by the Division for our Keenesburg Mine.
Mr. Hyder has indicated general acceptance of the proposed Division
stipulation wherein Coors would measure species diversity using relative
frequency (taken by species). However, he has presented some very good
reasons for requesting that the Division accept a slightly modified list
of acceptable components.
The proposed success criteria requires that Coors "establish a
minimum of seven (7) perennial species, of which four (4) are warm
season grasses, two (2) are cool season grasses, and one (1) is a forb".
This composition is developed from the Mine site reference area plant
frequency data presented by Hyder in Table 2.04.10(4) of the Application.
The problem arises when considering that our approved revegetation
seed mix has been carefully designed to eliminate some of the undesirable
plant species found at the range site. The approved post-mining land
use is grazing and the seed mix was developed accordingly.
• •
