• provide environmental and physiological monitoring instrumentation
• collect all field measurements from the study plots (Research Associate,
Summer Student Assistant)
• collect and process soil samples (Research Associate, Summer Student
Assistant)
• process and analyze field data (Research Associate and PI's)
• produce a summary report of results (PI':s)
• provide required progress, financial, final, and summary reports required by
OSM (PI's)
Seneca Coal will:
• furnish a large water tank to feed the irrigation system
• keep the tank supplied with water to provide irrigation water to the site
• maintain fences at the study site
• provide records describing soil treatments, storage, collection locations of
roto-cleared and dozer cleared soils on the experimental plot
• provide records of source and description of how potted trees were grown
• provide funding for staffing and operation needs during the 2006 growing
season.
Quality assurancelquality control procedures:
Shepperd and Musselman will administer agreements, recruit a qualified
temporary research associate and summer student assistant, provide training, on-site
supervision, and insure quality control of all field and lab operations. Measurements
and sample collections will be made and recorded a11he intervals specified above.
Field staff conducting growth and pressure measurements will be trained on correct
measuring protocols by both PI's. Musselman, will train field personnel to use
instrumentation and tools to measure plant water stress and photosynthesis. Field
staff will be provided with cell phones and instructed to contact Musselman by phone
should questions arise regarding sampling measurements or protocols. Both PI's will
conduct regular visits to the study site to insure that data is being collected properly
and to resolve any issues arising during field data collection.
Seneca Coal and the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology approved the
original study design and have made suggestions for changes that have been
incorporated into this proposal for additional research. Both will be kept appraised of
study progress and provide additional oversight. 'The Rocky Mountain Research
Station Biometrician was consulted on the original study design and will advise us on
proper data analysis and interpretation of results. Results of this research will be
published in apeer-reviewed outlet, which will provide additional oversight and insure
scientific integrity of results.
Determination of Goals:
The objectives of this proposed research will be met if we are able to:
Determine whether supplemental irrigation can benefit the survival and
establishment of aspen planted on reclaimEad surtace-mined lands in a high
altitude arid western environment. We also hope to quantify whether the
quality of irrigation water used in this experiment differs from that found
18
