The. site bras <br />visited July 20, 19`,2 by t•15. P,ussell, Dwight Araki, Lou i•IcYay ar.d I. <br />The 1~rob12m was a fire in both the. underground de'velop'nertt waste being <br />placed in an abandoned surface, coil mine and a fire in. an abandoned <br />underyround coal minx, Apparently the surface mine intersected or nearly <br />intersected the underground mine eventualTy'exposing ti)ese workings in . <br />the high~rall. ~+hen the coal development caste from the tlerrlin•Creek <br />underground mine, )+hich eras being used to fill the surface mine.,~reached <br />the toe or ti)e Ilighwall it caught fire: The fire in the waste material <br />eras limited to a small area near the burning.abandoned nine. All <br />indications arc that the waste, which had minimal com5ustible cohtent, <br />was ignited by tI)e pre-existing underground fire.. The area near`the <br />high~rzll:affected by the mine fire shovrs all indication of having been <br />present for some time and certainly predating tho placement of :.'the waste. <br />The mine opera:.or and F1s. Russell we.rc zdvis.ed that ±he xaste should be <br />isolated frail the mine and material from the high):~11 placed to seperate <br />the two .burgling materials and the..entire burning area, partially the coal <br />mine, covered with. the finest dirt available. <br /> <br /> <br />
