Section 816-I 16(a) -continued
Reference Area Location
The reference area is located on Maps I S and i 6.
[hods For EstalzlishiRe_Refereace Areas and Performance Standar
By September 30, 1980, a relationship between the range sites which will be disturbed by mining their
corresponding reference areas which will not be disturbed by mining, will be established. Relationships will be
established using the statistical "t" test in which the respective means for cover or production from the
undisturbed range site and reference area are compared. The test applied will be the null hypotheses (Ho) that
concludes that there is not a statistical difference between the two locations (u, and uz); here expressed
as: Ho: u, . u, = 0.
In this test. a "t" value calculated from the sample data is compared to a "t" value from a "t" distribution table
for the appropriate sample size and confidence. If the calculated "t" value is less than the tabular "t", then the
null hypothesis is accepted and the undisturbed range site and the reference area are considered one and the same.
A description of the formula is given as follows:
Calculated "t" for uneven sample sizes:
t = XI - X2
s i n~ + n,
r
n~ nz
