~olorado Cultural Resource Surve~
H iatorical Archaeology Component Form
Continuation (Page 1 of 5)
State Site #: 5OR65
Temporary #: N!A
4. General Site/Feature Description (Cont'd.):
Structure l is the mine manages residence constructed in 1903. It is a two-story wood
frame structure built in the 'Victorian Queen Anne style. The main structure measures 30 by 48
feet, oriented northwest to southeast, and has a steeply pitched composition shingle hip roof with a
tronsiderable overhang that is supported by decorative wooden brackets. The hip roof is rather
unusual for the style of structure, as ie the long overhang; both may be adaptations to the snowy
climate of the area. The building rests on a semicoureed shaped native stone and cement mortar
foundation and has ehiplap siding covered by relatively recent asbestos siding. Plain board
moldings surround the doors emd windows except above the windows where stepped moldings are in
place. The main facade of the structure is the northeast side. The main entry to the house is
located in the center of the elevation within a recessed entry porch. The porch is accessed by a set
of steps from the north. Both the porch and stairs are enclosed by a railing with square posts and
decorative turned balusters. 'Che door has a diamond shaped window and multiple wooden panels.
A transom is above the door and two one over one double hung wood sash windows are adjacent to
the left. The southeast end of the elevation has been given the appearance of a bay window by
having east corner of the buihling beveled end the southeast end of the porch angled at 45 degrees
outward. To the right of the porch is a decorative arcaded window having the arch divided into
three lights with two square panels below. Ornate stepped molding surrounds the window and
includes scrolls below. Above the first floor porch is a slight second floor projection flanked by one
over one windows. The lower portion of the projection is rounded on the ends, giving it a balcony
appearance, and is idled with wood strips in a herring bone pattern, meeting in the center to form a
decorative diamond. Above, the projection is squared on the ends and contains two banks of three
single light fixed wood sash windows. The north corner of the structure is incorporated into a
round two-story tower with shell-caste conical roof The ground floor of the tower contains five one
over one double hung wood sash windows, whereas the second floor has Cour of these windows.
Above tho second floor level, the tower u aided in decorative imbricated shingles. Italianate style
brackets support the eaves of the tower roof At the peak of the roof is a dernrative metal cornice
piece. Aside entrance is located to the right of center on the northwest elevation and an exterior
brick chimney u left of center. Where the chimney projects through the roof, it is Flanked by small
gabled roof attachments. A group of three one aver one double hung wood sash windows are on the
southwest end of the elevation with a single one over one window above. Another side entrance is
located in the center of the southeast elevation. A one over one window is located to the left of the
door and an exterior brick chimney is located to the right. Like the chimney on the northwest
elevation, it also has flanking gable-like attachments. The doorway leads onto an exterior covered
deck that ie a recent addition. Two shed additions have been attached to the southwest side of the
residence. The southeasternmost addition is 12 by 20 feet, oriented northwest to southeast, and is
covered with asbestos siding. On the northwest end is a 20 by 28 Coot garage, also oriented
northwest to southeast, built on a troncrete foundation with sheet metal aiding. Both of the
additions have sheet metal roofs. The garage is accessed through a large top lifting door and a
regular door on the northwest aide. The interior still retains most of the original moldings and
doors. The original hardwood floore are still present, though covered by linoleum and carpeting.
The only [nom that has seen anything more than cosmetic changes is the kitchen, which has had
new rnuntere and cabinets installed. The remainder of the interior is remarkably intact and could
be restored to its original condition with little dilliculty.
