Precipitation amounting to 6.62 inches i.n May
and early June wa:: enoul;h to promote crown roots nn many grasses. Those roots
are now deep enough to assure survival of plants, Inadequate stands are found
on mad-cut fills and some of the shallow cuts where bare sand is showing.
These areas were seeded quite late, but still have a few grass seedlings that
can be established by watering until about rni.d-August,
Flature seedier, of roadsides and stock piles
Because roadsides and stock piles are not cases of permanent reclamation, and
because they are espe~i.ally difficult to rater ~ff'ectively, I suggest changing
the seed mixture and time of seeding such areas in the future. The seed
mixture could be:
Arriba western wheatgrass ........ 3.0 lb~acre PLS
No7clan crested wheatgrass ,,...... 3.0
Luna p~.ibescent xheatgrass ........ 3.0
I,incol~, smooth bm,negrass ........ 1.0
S,Lnd divpseed .................... 0.1
'focal 10.1 lb acre PI:i
These species car. be established without watering in most years by drilling the
seed (after mulching :rith manure) in either September, November or March.
If hII.RB approves, you should consider ordering enough of this seed mixture for
20 to 30 acres for usr; this fall (you might need it by Sept. 1) and next spring.
Crass seed dri].1
A grass seed drill that rill handle trashy seed should be available to you in
the future. 1 have in!'ormation on three models that I can share with you, if
you rant to buy your cwtr, or xith Dlr. Arnold, if you prefer to rely on his
equipment.
Seed suppl7 for reclamation
If you plan to seed regraded mine areas next spring, you should consider
placing the order for seed in t}:e next month or co f'or delivery next April 1,
because seed supplies for some species run short of demand. This is the
complete reclamation seed mixture as approved (if approved) by hiLR.
