,~ IIIIIINIIIIIIIIIII~
March 20, 1978
Mr. James L. Schmieding
Mined Land Reclamation Division
1313 Sherman Street, Room 723
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Mr. Schmieding,

VALCO, INC.
GENERAL OFFICES
P. O. BOX 550
ROCKY FORD, COLORADO 81067
(303)254-7464
Re Valco, Inc. - Pueblo West Pit - MLR File No. 77-573
Division of Water Resources Memorandum, March 7, 1978
We appreciate your forwarding to us a copy of the Division of
Water Resources memorandum concerning our operations at the
Pueblo West Pit.
Living and working in the Arkansas Valley as we do at Valco,
we are aware of water problems in the Valley. Much of our
product goes into concrete irrigation ditches and other water
facilities. In our operating area throughout the Valley we
continually attempt to conserve water and minimize the
effects of our operations on the hydrologic balance. We
feel we are doing a good job in this respect.
Dr. Danielson's staff may have missed a few items in review-
ing our application, This is quite understandable in light
of the number of applications being processed at this time.
Our comments with respect to the items delineated in the
memorandum follow. They are numbered to conform to the para-
graph numbers in the memorandum.
1. Map Exhibits C, C-1, D-1 and F indicate that the Hamp-
Bell Ditch is never closer than 50 feet and is usually further
than 80 feet from the areas to be dewatered. To date dewatering
has had no effect on the nearby wells in the area or on the
Hamp-Bell Ditch. The closest dewatering that could affect
the two wells mentioned in the DWR memorandum is approximately
one-half mile to the southwest; wells as close as 300 feet
have not been affected up to now by dewatering. It is not
expected that downstream dewatering, which is lower on the
potentiometric surface, would affect these wells.
We appreciate the DWR identifying to us a well owned
by the City of Pueblo which they claim is adjacent to the
east side of Area 4. We were unaware this well existed. The
best property description of the well location we can obtain
from DWR records is somewhere within the NW/4 NE/4 Section 33,
T20S, R65W, 6th P.M. Since our east property line is the
Arkansas River, we can only assume the well in question
is on the other side of the river between 130 and 1300 feet
from the area to be dewatered in the year 2008. From our
past experience with dewatering in this area, we do not
believe the City of Pueblo well on the north side of the
river will be affected.
LAMAR CANON CITY PUEBLO
