INTRODIICTION
CLIENT
This cultural resources inventory was performed for a light .
aggregate quarry on the Winkler Cattle Company property.
' Centennial Materials requested the survey under their permit to
the Mined Land Reclamation Board, Division of Minerals and
Geology, Department of Natural Resources. The survey was
' conducted to identify the presence of sites or structures
possessing historical significance that are eligible to the State
Register of Historic Places, CRS 29-80.1-101, which stipulates
that the planning and activities of state agencies should include
' the preservation of sites and structures possessing historical
significance.
PROJECT AREA DESCRIPTION

The Winkler Light Aggregate Quarry project will mine the Wall
Mountain Tuff, which occurs in a horizontal bed and can be as
much as 20 feet thick. The formation outcrops at the mesa edge
' but is covered by as much as 16 feet of soil on the mesa top.
Mining will occur in an open pit mine.
' The project area includes four survey areas and a road alignment.
Area 1 is an irregular parcel lying on a mesa top and a narrow
mesa projection cut on two sides by intermittent drainages that
form steep-walled canyons. This area includes a quarry and the
Phase 1 stockpile, sediment detention pond, and a scale and shop
washing areas. Area 1 is about 1.1 km by 300 m and is
' approximately 90 acres. A haul road leads west from Area 1 to
Area 2. Area 2 lies approximately 1 mi west of Area 1. The road
branches to the north to Area 2. Area 2 is a narrow parcel along
the west side of a canyon rim. It measures 300 m by 100 m. Area
' 2 is a light aggregate quarry. Area 3 is a parcel of land about
900 by 100 m. A wide area was surveyed in Area 3 to allow
placement of the haul road within the corridor. An additional
area, Area 9, was surveyed north of the point where the haul road
crosses Willow Creek. Area 9, which encompasses the wide meander
along the creek, was inspected because this area will be reshaped
or stabilized.
The Winkler Light Aggregate Quarry is located in the Castle Rock
South USGS 7.5 Minute Topographic Quadrangle. It is in Douglas
County about 5 mi south of Franktown and about 1 mi south of
Castlewood Canyon State Park.
1
