1.0 Introduction
1.1 Project Purpose
This study examines the impacts resulting from changes in gravel truck traffic
patterns from the Brannan Sand and Gravel Pit due to the construction of E-470 and
the proposed changes in the local roadH~ay network. Adams County is concerned
about the impacts these trucks will have on the local traffic operations, and has
requested a traffic impact study from the E-470 Public Highway Authority, to be
included in the submittal for a conditional use permit for the Brannan Sand and
Gravel Company.
I.2 Project Description
The study area map is shown in Figure 1.1 . Brannan Sand and Gravel Company is
located directly south of 132"" Avenue between Brighton Road and Nome Street.
Gravel trucks from the existing gravel pit presently use Nome Street as the haul
route to US 85 (See Figure 1.2). Due to the construction of E-470, the alignment of
Nome Street in this vicinity will be absorbed by the new US 85 connector road to the
E-470 alignment and 132nd Avenue will cul-de-sac east and west of E-470 (See .
Figure 1.3 ). As a result of this change, the E-470 Public Highway Authority is
willing to relocate access for Brannan Sand and Gravel from Nome Street to l32"d
Avenue. Since132nd Avenue will no longer connect with US 85, gravel trucks from
the Brannan Sand and Gravel Pit will need to travel west on 132"" Avenue to
Brighton Road, north to 136'h Avenue, then east on 136`h Avenue to US 85. This is
the proposed new haul route to US 85.
2.0 Existing conditions
l.] Existing Roadway System
The existing roadway system is shown in Figure 1.2. Currently, 136'" Avenue is a
two-lane highway running east-west, and consists of 12 foot lanes with no paved
shoulders. The posted speed is 45 MPH. This street is stop-controlled at the
intersection of US 85, and at Brighton road, where it ends. Sight distance is
adequate at both intersections. The intersection of 136'" Avenue and Brighton Road
also coincides with the intersection of Nome Street and Brighton Road, creating an
unusual 4-legged intersection. This intersection appears to be operationally unsafe,
since the usual motorist right of way conventions cannot be applied.
Nome Street is a two-lane highway running north-south between US 85 and 136'"
Avenue/Brighton Road. The roadway consists of 12 foot lanes with no paved
shoulders. The posted speed is 40 MPH. Nome Street is stop-controlled at both US
85 and ]36ih Avenue/Brighton road. Sight distance is adequate at both intersections.
Currently, 132nd Street is a two-lane highway running east-west, and consists of 12
foot lanes with no paved shoulders. The posted speed is 45 MPH. 332"d Avenue is
stop-controlled at the intersection of US 85, and at Brighton Road, where it ends.
Sight distance is adequate at both intersections.
US 85 is a 4-lane, median divided, major inter-regional route connecting the Denver
area to Brighton and eastward. Agriculture and gravel mining are the major
industries in the area. As a result, vehicle composition is between 4-5 percent
