dewatering mechanism because the surrounding ground elevations are higher than the sediment
pond bottom elevations. The emergency spillways are designed to pass the 25-year, 24-hour
peak flow. The outflow below the spillway is to be riprapped where necessary to control
erosion.
With the exception of approved small area exemptions, all surface runofffrom disturbed areas is
routed through one of eight sediment ponds (note that Ponds 1 and 2 have been combined and
now form a single pond):
Area of Disturbance Sediment Ponds Other Structures

Rail Loadout Pond #1 and #2 Berrn, short ditch
North Portal Pond #13 Diversion, berms and ditches
North Decline Pond #7 Berm, ditches, sumps
South Portal Ponds #8, #9 Diversion, berms, pipes
CRDA-1 Pond #6 Berm, underdrain, ditches
CRDA-2 Pond # 10 Diversion, ditches
CBA-2 Pond #11
There is no Sediment Pond #3. Former Ponds 4, 5, and 12 have been reclaimed.
E. Impoundments
The only impoundments existing within the permit area in addition to sediment ponds are
sewage lagoons, and three non-discharging sumps. Former Mine-water treatment pond 12 has
been reclaimed. A set of evaporative, non-discharging sewage lagoons has been permitted near
the loadout for treating water from the Roadside Mine and the loadout.
Two small sumps were constructed in the North Decline reclamation area and one sump was
constructed in the Cameo Borrow Area #1 (CBA-1) to serve to capture and treat mnoff from
reclaimed lands. These sumps are adequately sized to contain runoff from a 25-yeaz, 24-hour
storm event.
F. Surface and Groundwater Monitoring
The permittee will conduct monitoring of groundwater in a manner approved by the
Division. The groundwater monitoring plan is detailed in Tab 18 of the permit application.
Piezometers have been installed in various permit area locations to monitor water level
and/or quality in alluvium, refuse fill, the Rollins Sandstone and abandoned sections ofthe
South Portals Mine. Monitoring locations are shown on "Roadside and Cameo No.l
Mines Hydrologic Monitoring Map" (Exhibit 56), in Tab 18. The groundwater
monitoring plan is outlined below; for additional detail refer to Tab I S of the approved
permit.
