It is then transported by other concerns
to various destinations to be consumed as an aggregate in construction
and/or maintenance, The primary product is coarse concrete
aggregate. The processing plant is equipped with a Johnson-March
dust suppression system. All crushing points and at cerCain points
o£ conveyance the material is treated with a mixture of water and
a wetting agent. The wetting agent is a compo+tnd that relieves the
surface tension of water which makes it more solvent. The mixture
is one gallon of wetting agent to 1,000 gallons of water. The
agent more than doubles the effectiveness of the water.
All roads within the operation are water treated to minimize
dust. The access road from the stockpile area to the highway
entrance is paved.
Carlson's report covers Cooley's activities during the previous
years cf operation on monitoring fugitive dust along their property
lines. Included in this report is a copy of a field inspection of
the operation by the Jefferson County and Colorado Health
Departments on October 31, 1974 that revealed no violations. In
this respect Cooley has never received a complaint from any agency
or from the public.
Safety precautions for both the workmen and public are
continually being implemented. The Colorado Bureau of Mines makes
an annual inspection of all facets of the operation, Their concern
is for both the workmen and the public. They have made numerous
recommendations on the operations since its beginning, but since
the county is more publicly concerned, only the precautions
directly related will be mentioned.
Ways and means to transport the material over the public
highways safely are being employed. The gravel company's personnel
along with the truck operators are directed to inspect the
equipment, load the material to avoid spillage, remove all loose
rock from bed ledges, check and secure tail gates before and after
loading, facilities provided for wetting down materials that might
be blown from the truck bed during transit, routing of deliveries
to avoid congested areas, and observe and obey all traffic laws,
signs and directions.
The major haul routes from site to market are Colo. 8, 285,
and 121 and all legal truck routes branching therefrom.
Approximately 15% via Colo, 8 and 171, with the remaining via
Colo. 8 and 285.
