5/23/75
.y
COOLEY GRAVEL COMPANY ~ „~, ,~ j
,1 t1 L 2 ~. ~ 975

This is to describe the quarry operation located approximately
1.5 miles south of Morrison on Colo. Hwy. 8 and all within the
attached property descriptions. The described property contains
166.99 acres, of which approximately 80.28 acres are directly
affected. Quarry excavation 57.4 acres, plant and stockpile 15.9
acres, access roads 5.28 acres and office and scale site 1.70 acres.
The methods employed by the Cooley Gravel Company in the operation
of the Morrison Quarry are stripping, drilling, blasting, loading,
hauling, r_rushing and screening, Each method is explained herewith
as they apply end in their respective sequential order.
Stripping is accomplished by bulldozer/ripper, scrapers,
loaders and trucks. The purpose being mainly to rid the surface
material of vegetation. Stripping is used for development of
access within the quarry and will afterwards be used in reclamation.
Drilling is by air tracks powered by portable air compressors.
Wet drilling is employed to minimize dust. A 3" diameter hole
with a maximum depth of 40' is being used. An 8' x 8' staggered
;idrill hole pattern has been successful. Explosives used are
;~; ~dynemite and ammonium nitrate (anfo}. Detonators are blasting cap=.
to prima cord to primers to anfo. Drill patterns are designed not
5 to exceed blasts of 10,450 lbs. total explosives using at least a
\1 half dozen delays, Refer to the report dated March 20, 1975 on
the analysis of blasting and submitted herewith as a part of this
application. The report was prepared by Kenneth W. Carlson, a
grFduate student of the Geophysics Department of the Colorado
School of Mines. Carlson's education and professional experience
is listed on the last page of the report. The report by Carlson
is supported by certain data compiled by Cooley and the School of
Mines over the previous years the quarry has operated.
The quarry will be excavated to leave a series of benches with
$0' vertical heights sloping at less than 80 degrees from horizontal
with horizontal level widths of 40'. Refer to CSMRI Project
No. C41006 which is the Morrison Quarry Layout of December 1974 and
an accompanying letter of explanation from James M. Link., Mining
Division Director. These documents have been submitted as a part
of this application.
The material to be processed is loaded into off-hil;hway trucks
with a front end loader and transported therewith to the processing
plant. The processing plant is basically a series of crushers,
screens and conveyors so arranged that the material can be sized
