email: lwoomer@sugf.com
From: King, David
Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2007 10:48 AM
To: Woomer, Lynn
Cc: Noland, Rick; Acree, David; Frazier, Virgil; Young, Shawn; 0lguin, Mike
Subject: RE: Gravel operation environmental procedures
He11o Lynn,
We are working on two projects. The first is for Federal Highways on a US Parks Service
project at Mesa Verde National Park. The park is a national and international tourist
destination, national treasure and key component to the area economy. I am sure it is
the intent of the Parks Service to maintain their roads for the benefit and safety of the
traveling public. The second is for the State of Colorado on a federally funded highway
maintenance project.
The General Contractor's and SUSG's production and construction schedules are dictated to
us by these government agencies, specifications and the weather. The projects can only be
built with in very specific climatic temperatures. Both projects were bid early this
summer (i.e. during paving season) and have required extra effort on our part to produce
adequate quantities of materials to meet the schedule demands and scope of these projects.
We have finished the crushing for the Mesa Verde job. The general contractor has
completed the chip seal portion of the project. They are currently in the process of
asphalt foaming the existing aggregate base course on the job. When this is complete the
asphalt paving operations should start with in the next two to three weeks. We anticipate
the complete of the Mesa Verde Project in late August or early September.
SUSG anticipates completing the aggregate crushing and double shift for the CDOT job in
approximately 2 weeks. The finish date for the aggregate crushing operation is. contingent
on the final CDOT asphalt mix design which is 100 out of our control. The General
Contractor will start on the CDOT job in September. It would not surprise me if the
General Contractor is paving for the CDOT project until mid to late October. Typically
asphalt paving projects are shut down the end o£ October due to weather complications.
These projects are required for public safety, access to the national park and maintenance
of area highways.
We typically do not conduct a double shift for our crushing operations. Our backup alarms
are required by Mined Safety Health Administration rules and regulations. The back up
alarms on the equipment are required for safety. We are operating within and often exceed
existing and established County, State and Federal rules and regulations for our
operation. We are meeting the construction demands of some of the very agencies this lady
is threatening to visit. I would welcome her assistance in encouraging the government to
give us adequate time to build their projects; lobbying for adequate highway funding for
the construction and maintenance of safe highways; so that the construction industry does
not have to go to such extraordinary effort to build these various public projects. The
compressed construction schedules are difficult to say the least for us and we realize
there is an impact to the traveling public and area residents. We also recognize
the benefits o£ the projects for the public which include their safe return home,
increased fuel economy, reduced wear and tear on vehicles, quality experience in our
community, etc.
We are making every effort to complete this job as quickly and quietly as possible, but we
still have job to complete. I hope this explanation helps. Please call with questions or
solutions.
Thank you,
David A. King, President
Sky Ute Sand & Gravel, LLC
PO Box 350
Ignacio, CO 81137
970/382-0609 phone
970/385-7620 fax
970/759-8803 cell
3
