CO 80860
Attention: Mr. Ron Roberts

002
~~..~'~ ~A~~~jV
Our Ref: 963-2027.005
RE: REVISION TO HAUL ROAD DEPTH FOR TRACTOR-7'xaii.F,R i7NI'PS
Deaz Ron,
As the construction equipment proposed by the earthworks contractor was not known at the
time the specifications were prepared, the specifications had a general statement that
identified a minimum of five feet of cover material was required between rubber tired
equipment and the geomembrane surface. The Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining
Company (CC&V) has requested that Golder Associates Inc. (Golder) determine an
appropriate haul road depth for the side dump tractor trailer units that will be used by the
contractor during the 1996 construction season.
!n 1994, CAT 773B haultrucks were used to transport Low Volume Solution Collection
Fill and Drain Cover Fill The maximum gross weight identified by Caterpillar for a CAT
773B is 204,000 pounds; one-third of the weight is distributed to the front axle, and two-
thirds distributed to the rear axle. Using the pressure distribution approach that has been
used in the past for this project and that is detailed in Attachment A, the contact pressure at
the surface of the geomembrane was calculated to be 5. I pounds per square inch (psi).
Golder used the geomembrane wntact pressure identified above as a criterion to calculate
the depth of cover material required for the side dump tractor trailer units. A loaded
tractor trailer unit was weighed and a copy of the weight ticket is provided in
Attachment B. Based on these weights, the maximum weight per rite was calculated to be
5,360 pounds, located at the drive axle of the tractor unit. The calculations, presented in
Attachment B, show that a geomembrane contact pressure of 5.1 psi is achieved for
42 inches (3-1/2 feet) of cover. Therefore, Golder recommends that the side dump tractor
trailer units be allowed to travel on 3-1/2 feet thick haul roads constructed of either Low
Volume Solution Collection Fill or Drain Cover Fill.
OFFICES IN AUSTRALIA, CANADA, GERMANY HUNGAM.
