! i
FIELD OPERATIONS
Sam~g Actlvttles
Sampling acUviUes were conducted on April 26, 1995. Access to the Battle Mountain Gold
permit area was not secured at the time of field activities; therefore, no direct observations
of the mine's workings were documented. Sample collection was limited to offsite surface
water and sediment samples.
Surtace water and sediment samples, BM-SW/SE-01, were collected from the Rito Seco
east of the mine's permitted area within CosUlla County greenbelt property. Samples
were collected from the Rlto Seco immediately west of the western boundary of the pemtlt
area and designated BM-SW/SE-02. Surtace water and sediment samples, designated
BM-SW/SE-03, were collected from the Rito Seco downstream of significant lengths
(greater than 0.1 stream miles) of scrub-shrub wetlands contiguous to the river.
Proposed samples BM-SW/SE-04 were not collected because an adequate stream-
weUand evaluation was achieved with the location and collection of samples BM-SW/SE-
03. Sediment sample BM-SE-05 was collected from the flowing ditch at the diversion
point to the reservoir. The ditch from which BM-SW-0S was collected receives flow from
the Rito Seco diverted approximately 2 miles northeast of the reservoir.
A sediment sample {BM-SE-06) was collected from the dry drainage channel
downgradierrt of the tailings disposal facility on the west side of the fence line between
Dos Hermanas property and the mine permit area.
Non~amQlina Data Collection
Observations regarding flora and fauna habitat associated with the Rito Seco River were
documented. Catchable size game fish (trout) were observed at locations east of the
Battle Mountain Gold permit area. Numerous, apparently recent beaver dams were
observed on the Rito Seco both within the permitted area and to the east within the Dos
Hermanos Ranch. Beaver dam placement has resulted in extensive inundation of areas
adjacent to the Rlto Seco channel. Scrub-shrub wetland vegetation was noted to be
essentially continuous from a point within the permitted area to a point beyond the river's
exit from the foothills.
a~aeav~.aroamrx - 2 - lp.r a aMi.~1
4
