Reclamation of John Reed Mine <br />This task consists of the following: <br />(1) Prior to any disturbance (road-building, excavation, grading, etc.) best management practices <br />(BMPs) for sediment and erosion control will be put in place downgrndient from proposed <br />activities. These BMPs will consist of placement of silt fence or straw bales in drainages, small <br />sumps or swales to collect runoff, and any other shoR-term measure to prevent sedimentation. <br />(2) Closure of the entryway ("shaft on the hill") on the hillside to the north will be done by use of <br />several lazge rocks placed in the opening and then pushed back inside to a depth of 6-8 feet. <br />Existing onsite rock will then be scattered around and blended into loose rock at the opening to <br />make it obscure to the casual observer. <br />(3) Closure of the concrete-lined vertical shaft ("shaft by the road") will consist of capping the <br />shaft with apre-fab concrete slab as specified in Appendix 1. <br />(4) Loading, hauling, and dumping of 4200 cu yds of acid-producing materials from the John Reed <br />dumps to a repository on the F-Dump, 2.4 miles distant will be required. To upgrade the existing <br />road from Storke Area to the John Reed Mine, using 6 inches of road rock on the existing base, <br />assume 250 cu yds of aggregate from the Storke Aggregate Pile will be used. Acid materials will <br />be mazked in the field by wire flags or some other equivalent method. <br />(5) After complete removal of all acid-producing waste rock materials, the removal areas and road <br />disturbances will be graded to blend with surrounding topography and clean growth media will be <br />replaced on the surface to a depth of six inches. It is anticipated that 1600 cu yds will lre needed <br />from the growth media area west of the Colorado Southern RR fill (approx. 1300 ft haul distance). <br />s <br />(6) Revegetation will be conducted according to Task 10(1), including mulcing with straw at 1.5 <br />tons/acre and crimping, for the removal area, the roadway, and around the shafts. <br />(7) For the wetland area downgradient from the mine, a wetland enhancement procedure (soil <br />amendments and revegetation) will be used for the 2.1 acre wetland. First, a hole will I>e dug by <br />hand to a depth of one foot. The excavated material will be mixed with approximatel}~ one pint of <br />lime (spec: min. 90% CaCO3 and >50% minus 60 mesh) and placed in the hole around ttie planted <br />seedling. Spacing for the seedlings (500 bog birch and 700 willows) will be 9 ft x 9 ft. <br />
