In fact, the sides and bottom of the channel in this azea <br />aze better vegetated than in years past. <br />Cross-section 5 This cross-section of the channel is located on an extremely steep section <br />of hillslope on bond released land and is being monitored only to predict how this area <br />might affect that of the bonded portion. Vegetation is present on the side slopes of the <br />channel and some was noticed in the bottom. Rock size in the channel varies from 2 to <br />12 inches in diameter and the channel generally appears well armored. The broadening of <br />the channel on the south side is the result of an ancillary flow path whose confluence <br />occurs at this location. The area did exhibit significant deepening which was caused by <br />some downslope movement of the channel bottom armor. The stretch of channel <br />immediately above the cross-section location does not appeaz to be "head-cutting" Due <br />to the significant channel deepening, two hay bale check dams were placed above and <br />below the cross section in late 1998. The zone between the check dams was filled with <br />rock. The zone filled in with sediment during the spring 1999 runoff period, creating a <br />stair-step that appeared stable. The current cross-section measurements reflect the filled <br />in zone between the check dams. <br />Based on the data collected from the five cross-sections and a general survey of <br />the azea this concentrated flow feature does not appeaz to be experiencing excessive <br />erosion. Therefore, no mitigative measures are proposed for this concentrated flow <br />feature at this time. <br />GOAT TRAIL EXIT CHANNELS <br />Transects were measured at the three constructed exit channels along the Goat Trail. The <br />location of these outlets aze shown on Exhibit 1, Sheet 2 of 2. The channels were measured <br />across monuments placed in 1993 and compazed to evaluate erosion activity. The survey results <br />are shown graphically in Appendix B. Each of the three drainage areas had cross-section <br />measurements taken at two locations. <br />Exit Channel 1 <br />The cross-sections show that this feature remained stable when compazed to the 1998 <br />survey data. Cross-section 2 indicates the feature is relatively stable in this section of the <br />channel with periods of agradation and degradation. Corrective measures planned as a result of <br />the inventory include cleaning the entrance area of the exit channel. <br />Exit Channel 2 <br />Cross-section 1 shows significant agradation when compazed to the 1998 monitoring <br />data. This portion of the exit channel was affected during [he reclamation operations of the <br />conveyor belt corridor in late 1996. The lower section of the channel at cross-section 2 shows a <br />slight deepening when compazed to 1998 data. Due to the location of the degraded channel <br />sections, it will not be possible to reshape the sections without affecting a significant azea of <br />undisturbed ground. Therefore, the length of channel between the two cross-sections will be <br />17 <br />
