III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Deparlmenl of Nalu ral Resources
1313 Sherman 51., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (3031 866-3567
FA%:13031 832 8106
DATE: June 14, 1994
TO: Larry Routten ~~ r
FROM: Erica Crosby /V/
RE: Hawk's Nest (C-81-016)
~~~
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
RESOURCES
Roy Rumer
Guvernor
Ken Salazar
E~rc ulrve Dueuw
Michael B Land;
Division Dueaur
I am attempting to dive into the final reclamation project for the Hawk's Nest
Mine..now that we have the Silos out of the way. Before I get in too far, and
possibly off track, I wanted to run some things by you and get your thought a.
1. As you are aware, purchase orders will eventually be a thing of the past,
~1 rlny(1 unless we can keep our projects under $15,000. Maggie ie working on
(P~s _1 getting an exemption for the remaining Hawk's Nest work. She feels
Gf confident that it will go through Purchasing. Because of this, we really
~{~S ~ need to complete the work within this field season. I would hate to
figure out how to do this as a "contract".
We have roughly $80,000 remaining in the Hawk's Nest fund. The remaining
tasks include; regrading the remaining coal material, topsoil replacement,
seeding (roughly 3 acres), removal of 4 drums of potentially hazardous
material, sealing and plugging an estimated dozen de-gas wells and
exploration wells. I estimate that this work will be no more than
$50,000. Other possible tasks may include drainage re-construction (East
pit area below spring), pond removal and heaven forbid, reclaiming the
refuse pile.
// 3. Regrading the remaining coal material- Terror Creek removed a large
~L//fh Y'" SAo~ AP ? portion of the coal stockpile, but there still remains a good size pile of
~Vll> GA ° mal ~ onas to to ThereelisVeroba.bl h1aroundr2a000s clxto 3 OOOoce of lmaterial
P Y Y Y
remaining. I propose spreading this remaining material to the eastern
edge of the Silo Borrow area. This would blend in well with the existing
~ topography. The remining material can be pushed to the west.
J
DAP) ~tl Z;4. / Topsoil- I've estimate 2,300 cy of topsoil remaining in the pile. This
t~p C°Q would be enough for 6" cover on the coal silo area. I spoke with Quint
~oaP1 ~ Kessler of CDOT regarding slide material in the North Fork area. He
/h ~ o ; /Lf War stated that they are always having slides and are desperately looking for
W w ~ fPfd places to dispose of the material. They are currently moving material out
j1 1d2 pla ~ of the Paionia dam, and this may continue the entire summer. I asked him
S~ ~~G6P to call me when they had a slide area close to Hawk's Nest, and he agreed.
o ffJalaVa ~-I will also keep in touch with him as we approach the project date. This
'r~ ~ ~ 1 material would be a good subsoil cover over the remining coal waste and
~~ H~ any possible ditch construction (especially in the East area).
Q ~2
Rom'
I gave Barbara what information I had on the ground water hydrology for
that region. Hopefully, she can determine if the de-gas wells and
exploration holes are wet or dry. This will determine how we seal the
holes and how much it will cost. Bruce Stover gave me some good
information on sealing and plugging holes- especially the methane gas
wells.
