Dept. o} Natural Resources
Dear Mike,
Yampa Mining Co., has the following response to stipulation number
one of H-G Coal Company permit number C-003-80.
Stipulation
Within one year of permit issuance, H-G Coal Company must propose to
the Division an acceptable standard, based on the results of their site
specific study and other available data, for the deternination of reclama-
tion success of woody plant density on the llavden Culch site.
Response
The following summarizes Yampa Pf?Wing Co.'s efforts in shrub establish-
ment.
In the fall of 1980 1000 containerized shrubs were planted into an area
that had recently been seeded. The shrubs consisted of aspen, chokecherry,
scrub oak, and serviceberry. The area was evaluated during the summer of
1981 and approximately 40% survived. The area was evaluated again in 1982
and had a 5% survival.
In the spring of 1981 2000 rubber rabbitbrush and big sagebrush seedlings
Caere planted. Evaluation in 1982 revealed that approximately 10-20% survived.
In the fall of 1981 approximately 25 acres of land were reclaimed with
live topsoil. On those areas where the upper 6-8 inches of original ground
topsoil was placed on the surface, an average of 450 shrubs/acre were
found. Shrubs sampled included snowberry, chokecherry and serviceberry.
This is the only area at the mine in which shrubs ,other than sagebrush have
regenerated naturally.
During the spring of 1982 the Soil Conservation Service planted three
sbrub plots with containerized plants. Preliminary sampling during the
fall of 1982 indicates an 80o survival.
ST\P -1
